Elmer Scallish is a longtime member of the Old Newsboys. He has participated in many roles including serving as President of the organization in 1978.

Elmer and his family have been a key factor in the success of the Old Newsboys annual fund drive for many years. In fact, in 2007 the Old Newsboys estimated that Elmer and the Scallish family had raised over $660,00 for the Old Newsboys Charity Fund.

Bill Sanford, President of the Old Newsboys Goodfellow Association recently spoke about Elmer's contributions to the Old Newsboys, “With his strong commitment to the needy children of this area and his dedication to the Old Newsboys mission, Elmer truly exemplifies the character of our organization. We all appreciate the work he and his family put into the paper sale campaign each year. His leadership and energy is critically important to the Old Newsboys --- we are proud to recognize him for his loyalty and hard work.”

Although Elmer's contributions to the Old Newsboys are certainly appreciated, his profile centers around his involvement in Toledo sports, from football to boxing -- he's done it all.

That same year, he was honored by being selected as Assistant Coach at the Ohio High School All Star Football Game.

Elmer was named Football Line Coach at Purdue University from 1958 through 1960. From there he moved on to George Washington University as Line Coach for one year before serious illness in his family brought him back to Toledo and forced him to give up coaching until 1963. That year, Elmer was named Defensive Coordinator of the Toledo Tornadoes of the Continental Football League.

After seven years with the Tornadoes, Elmer left coaching once again to pursue a career in education administration with the Toledo School System. He was named Assistant Principal and Dean of Boys at Woodward High School from 1969 through 1971. In 1971, he moved back once again to Waite high School as Assistant Principal until 1975 when he was selected as Supervisor of Adult Education for the Toledo Public Schools.

Elmer continued to widen his range of experience in 1977 when he became Job Placement Coordinator at Woodward High School.
